Vacationing, and the like.

So, I took a week long "vacation" and it sucked. I think im one of those rare people who can't just unplug for more than a day. I mean, it was nice to catch up with family and friends on this god forsaken island and stuff... but really, all i could think about was plugging back into the suck and getting back to work.

I think im more relaxed now if anything, working on the new show for the upcoming 2010 tour, packing up and gearing up for the VMA's... just keeping busy as usual. Allthough i do miss the shit out of my studio... would certainly make my life alot more easier, not to mention creative, if i had access to the boatload of gear and musical toys i've been hoarding for over 10 years, as opposed to sitting in some room with a PC and a midi controller.

I have GOT to find a way to make this career work from home... i mean, not stop touring alltogether, but at least throwing less, but much larger shows... but keeping based in one spot to do all the work expected of me... the remixes, the album, the show production, the everything else.

i think i have decided to move to LA.

  2. I'm happiest while working, as well. If I had the means, I'd certainly move to LA--it's probably the best place for the life you want to live.

  3. I'm telling you, You should make that studio buss you talked about one time on ustream with the laser sheep. you would need one for Europe and one for north/south america. but still. you could have all your gear on you while your driving around.

Don't move to LA, move to Detroit. the home of techno and it's still close to your mom.

  4. Noooo, move to England instead :)

  5. Please do Mau5!! You need more shows in the So Cal area and if you live here, that's totally unavoidable. ;)

  6. right...how could you drop an atomic bomb while all of your powerful machinery weapons are back in your studio in toronto. wow.. so,that is a big news! LA, hah. not digging a city like NY?? o_O

  7. NO YOU CANT

I loved that 45 minutes of set that you did at your last night at the 9:30 when you collapsed.

I would love you to death if you came to the DC/Baltimore area and I'm willing to drive anywhere within a few hours of baltimore to see you. You didn't finish that show and I think you need to :)

  8. Toronto is going to miss you!!

  9. LA would love you. Especially the considering the vast array of possible drop of a dime event. Lots of undergroundability ^_^

  10. Deadmau5 represent at the VMAs, show the mtv crowd what they have been missing out on all this time. And can't wait to see you out in Chi-town in Oct.

  11. "Fewer" shows, not "less." Sorry to be an asshat, but my grandmother got me for this like 400 times when I was younger and now it stands out.

Anyway, got my tickets; can't wait to see you in Kansas City. Still, you gotta keep this business fun for yourself, I suppose... So more studio time is probably a good thing.

    Regards.

  12. LA is the most neurotic city in the world. We'd love to have you. :)

  14. if i move to china my job would be 1000 times easier.. but fuck that! i'd never do that. i live in ny. the greatest city in the world. why would i ever leave.
you my friend, you need to be in la or ny. a media city. an entertainment city. a place where you can work all day and night if you want and have all the talent in the world around you at your finger tips. toronto is great and all but dude its time to make the move.

  15. Come to LA, it's the city with the just right fuck up situations. Plus we have amazing food here.

  16. Bleh, take it ez, maybe a week on week off touring would work better, but rly I wouldn't take any of my advice, I'm not even a musician...

  17. AAAH, I just took in what you said earlier, laptop + midi controller... barbaric, I'd die or at least be really miserable w/o dual 22" screens + mouse, ergonomic keyboard, makes manipulating data way easier etc... I can only imagine what not having recording equipment n stuff is like.

  18. Do what feels right. I'd rather see an artist alter their process and be in control than hang it up or burn out from the BS. It IS your life... isn't it?

  19. Joel,
I absolutely love your work. I get totally lost in your music. You had me at 'not exactly' (a part of ATB's-DJ in the Mix, a while ago). It was at that time that I fell in love with the sound of Deadmau5.

I've seen you in Chicago this year when you performed at the Soldier Field. The night and the weather were perfect for that outdoor show. The light show was really great and I loved seeing you with different mou5 heads. I once again got lost in your music, and I was SO happy when you played 'not exactly'. BTW, I thought your show was perfect :)

I am so looking forward to watching the VMA's. You deserve this so much, and I can't wait to see you there doing what you do best. You're gonna do so amazing there, and I'm so happy for you!

You have such an awesome talent, and no matter where you decide to go, I hope you'll never stop creating music. I've loved your work for a long time, and I know that I'll continue to. Plus, your sense of humor has me laughing out loud pretty often, and that's another big plus about you that I truly appreciate.

Have a blast at the VMA's! I wish you all the love and support this world has to offer :)

    Xo

  20. less shows is fine so long as you make sure to come to chicago at least twice a year hahahaha :)

  21. please don't leave toronto. i have only been there a few times but loved every second of it. although it might be easier to move to la i think it could have a negative effect that you are always going to be pressured to work more and not be able to get away from the fake people that fill the entertainment and music industry. i'm not sure how toronto effects you, but when i am there i feel like i am home. like i belong there and it inspires me to think differently with all of the different people and cultures. you are a product of canada. and besides, all of the people who i know from la and who move out there are just chasing a dream that someone else put in their mind. that and facist money hungry cunts. stay in toronto. keep your peace of mind

  22. Going back to the basics cant hurt shows you how far you have come over the years just think back to what you started with... I mean all i use is a midi keyboard, laptop and virtual gear, tbh this is due to cash-flow problems lol. It will never beat some modular mayhem but fuck it, maybe one day. Have fun @ the VMAs :) PS, I think you should ask for Justin Biebers autograph LOL JK.

  23. indeed !!! maybe less is more!!! pi like the IDEA of large shows! visuals and all

  24. Being able to make a living with your hobby is such a double edged sword, how do you take a vacation from work when your leisure is the same?

    ReplyDelete
  25. check out this interview with Armin van Buuren.
I think you could take his advice on pressure, working on a new album and such.

and dude..you should get some air filtration system.. LA pollution is deadly.

    ReplyDelete
  26. thank you for writing about real shit that helps me learn about you as a person and an artist. Can't speak for everyone (and really wouldn't that pressure!) but it's refreshing to discover an artist you fucking love and relate to and they are on the level. You write about real shit that you have experienced in life/music and that's what I want to read....I don't want to read a Mau5 post about politics or the economy or some bullshit......Please don't ever turn into a Bono and adopt some kid with aids from Nairobi (i'm pretty sure that same model can be found in the usa for way cheaper).

**BTW - My wife and I can't fucking wait to see you at the "Tab" in Atlanta Oct 1ST.....THANKS FOR DECIDING WE ARE COOL ENOUGH TO HEAR "....MAKE ME MAKE THAT FUCKING SOUND, MAKE ME MAKE THAT FUCKING SOUND". LIVE.

    Much Respect,
    Matt

  27. hmm, is there any way to test how large an audience you'll get in certain areas?

  28. Move to Seattle, dude. Do a set at the EMP and begin it with your own remix of "Hello Seattle" by Owl City. It's genius. Then again, that could be my ego talking.

    ReplyDelete
  29. hmm, just an observation... but fans usually agree with whatever is said right? I wonder what the hard limit for that would be...

  30. vaz modular:

  33. Seattle has an excellent public transportation system, dude.

  34. If I had your monster modular synth, I wouldn't leave the studio... The cloud generator is RIDICULOUS...

I might as well give you a "your music is sick, you are the man, thanks for being real"... And sweet job at the VMAs, your solitaire playing is top notch

  36. Don't move to LA man, Toronto is too awesome to leave. Plus Tim Hortons and DeMaurier?? Can't live without that eh?

    ReplyDelete
  37. maybe its less about vacationing and more about timing?
as an engineer, its really hard to unplug and relax when i have a major deadline due just after the vacation - or when i am really focused on something im working on.
wherever you end up making your home, make sure its a place that feels right for you. some people need to stay grounded in their past - it keeps them hungry to strive for more. some people need to Larvae-Cocoon-Butterfly and evolve, and LA seems like it has that environment too.
or maybe its just any place that Professor Meowingtons is at.

  38. well that will be sad. ur our #1 cool factor. sobs. bye bye mau5. :(

  39. Maybe if you stopped running round like a headless chicken you would have time to do and be all that you want . Your still acting like someone who is 'starting out' you've made your place in the music world , you don't HAVE to be here there and ever where all the time touring.

But then again thats a choice YOU make no one else .

Your also infactuated with what people think all the about you . WHY?

If some people say they don't like something you've made you , you do tend to spit your dummy out over it .

Silly really you can't please all the people all the time .

I have been to one of your shows ealier this year although I enjoyed it I wouldn't go again . Nothing to do with you or your music . Simply did not enjoy being with all the people that where there .

I stood at the back where your sound guy and lighting guy work I was oringally stood near the front but all that pushing and shoving of people clearly off their trolleys on 'what ever' was not my thing at all . Hence I moved .

As silly as it may sounds I Still had a good time cos i could see your show better . I personally had a better time .

I like most of the tunes you make but not all of them .But that is honesty for you .

As I am sure you don't like everything that artist you like produce .

You can live in Catmando at the end of the day its where makes YOU happy.

  42. L.A. is the world capitol of entertainment. It makes a lot of sense for you to move here. Can't wait to run into you and don't worry I have read your "that guy" blog.

  43. I just want you to know you have changed my life. Not in any sort of deep way or anything, I just really fucking love your music. If I'm having a bad day that shit always cheers me up. I mean, I don't love ALL of your music, but the stuff I do love makes it so life is always pretty good even when shit sucks. I know you will probably never see this, but I felt important to say it to you anyway. I would tell that to all my favorite musicians if I could. Unfortunately you're the only one who really stays connected with their fan base. It's all about the music nukka.

  44. please don't get stabbed. life will suck without your music. and if you do get stabbed... please run really really fast.
    thanx

  45. New York is where it's at. Way classier, way nicer. Four seasons.
Plus how often do you really get to play in NY? Not very...

    ReplyDelete
  46. I spent two years living in downtown huntington beach; you might love living there :D it's always where shit goes down [us opening, x games, 4th july parade, free concerts, festival every tuesday, etc]. beautiful beach aand pier, too.

or you can settle in a nice quiet village in oregon where you can keep from the noise of a lot of people

    ReplyDelete
  47. it would be a good idea to settle down. Then you'll be happy working on your music in the way you want to work on it PLUS you can actually establish closer relationships due to the fact that you're staying in one place for a longer time.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Come to Stockholm, Sweden, instead. We make the best coffee!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I would be very sad if you only had large venue shows. I have seen you many times and my favorite show was when you played The House of Blues in San Diego, California. It was the most intimate gathering and the vibe was absolutely amazing. I live in Los Angeles and I hope if you do move here, you'll consider throwing a couple one-off parties at small venues like that. Rock on, good sir.

    ReplyDelete
  50. If you do in the end move here, try the outskirts of LA. not talking Beverly Hills or Hollywood crap, but a residential area deep in the unknown where you could find retreat. its hectic down here.
