PSA: 15 stuffs you may or may not have known.

im gunna keep this one simple, but here's the rundown.

1. I am not a Disc Jockey.  There is no jockeying of discs going on.

2. I just make music and produce shows.

3. Sometimes i run out and buy nestle  iced tea mix and just eat the powder with a teaspoon while watching Hoarders.

4. Meowingtons is my cat, his full name is "Professor Meowingtons PhD."  yes i am obsessed with him.

5. I try not to stick to one genre of Electronic Music. Ive been known to dabble in just about everything.

6. The green thing on my neck is a space invader.

7. I dont really like getting my photo taken, not because i dont like getting my photo taken, but because i dont really like physical contact all that much... i tend to cringe away when someone tries to put their arm around me. I just dont like being touched really. It's just a thing i have, nothing personal.

8. Everyone always ask me what my tattoos mean... well they dont really mean anything, i just like tattoos.

9. When am i coming to X city?  I'll get there eventually, ive been touring my ass off to please everyone, and eventually we'll schedule an event near you, so dont worry.

10. what do you think about X DJ or Producer. I dont really have any opinions on anyone else, just because i can clearly see how opinionated everyone is about me, and how much it always goes back and forth... i dont bother putting those opinions on other people who are probably just as passionate as i am about making music or performing.

11. I live in the lovely city of Toronto, Canada.

12. I dont think i've sold out. To me, selling out would mean doing something against my morals for cash. So far, i haven't done that. And my music certainly hasn't and wont change towards a direction that isnt something im not feeling.

13. I dont particularly enjoy interviews... only because many of them are the same questions over and over again and arent very creative / interesting at all. Its usually the same old: how did you come up with the name deadmau5, how do you feel about playing X event, how is it different than other parts of the world, etc etc YAWN.

14. If youre not a DJ then how come youre doing X event or are involved in X poll, etc etc. Honestly, i dont know. But it's cool. Electronic music is so etched into DJ culture that it's almost completely unavoidable to be associated. I dont have any problems with that, but i am aware of the gross misconception of unnoticeable difference between Producers and DJ's (who are very often both) and producing a show. One of my goals in life is to make it more clear, it's an uphill battle, but at least its challenging and interesting!

15. Drugs don't really do anything for me. I've never bothered to indulge in that lifestyle, but on the same note, i am not anti-drug. I have enough respect for humans to let them make their own choices, whether they seem stupid to me or not. The type of people i CANT stand tho, are those who impose lifestyle choices onto others... THATS something i hate right there. I don't think theres anything more annoying in society than people who feel the need to force their idea of an ideal lifestyle onto someone else. Thats just cheap. I wont elaborate, but, you get the idea.

  2. The whole concept of selling out is bullshit. Good music is good music, period, regardless of the artist's motivation or how many fans they have.

  3. Number 3 made me love you as a person even more!

  5. I hate it when people bitch about you claiming you're not a "DJ" and getting their panties in a bundle over it...you're absolutely right and I commend your journey of making the distinction more clear :)

  6. fuck id sell my soul if the price was right. so making some music your not really into for money? id do that at the drop of a hat. fuck the haters and you go sell your soul. any one who says they wouldn't is lying through their teeth

  7. end of the day there is gonna be a time no one wants to hear you/your music anymore, and your gonna have a house and shit to pay for. you know how fickle the music industry is, make as much money as you can while you can. then you can slip back into doing the shit you love best and your true fans will forgive you. im sure

  9. @number 1,2,14: i have the problem right now that im a dj and (hobby)producer, but am trying to produce my show and manipulate the music life. and most people dont know the difference. maybe u could make a video in which you show the people how you produce a show, so they can see the difference :)

  10. Love the PSA. I knew most of that already, but maybe I'm just a good listener.

But I bet ya didn't know this: When I was like eight I used to eat the pre-sweetened Cherry Kool-Aid powder by itself while watching ThunderCats. True story.

While I was glad to hear what you were saying there, I got a small brain twisty trying to read your triple negative in number 12. I'm not trying my worst not to be all un-didactic on ya or anything, but it may be worth noting that, just like in math, together in a sentence an odd number of negatives = a negative, and an even number = a positive. :D

    Kthnxluvzbai! ♥

  15. yeah, i don't like random people i don't know attempting to hug me either, and given your environment.... im guessing its frequent.

    ReplyDelete
  16. sorry I put my hand on your shoulder at the Dome in Wasaga, Ontario. It was random and just told you I enjoyed the video 'we fail' and thought your dance moves were great. btw I was wearing my WTF? shirt..haha

  17. I have been having a debate with a dude wether or not you were a dj. and finally i can prove your not a fucking dj. (all respect to dj's)

    ReplyDelete
  18. so... how did you come up with the name deadmau5?

    errr, i mean..

Pretty cool stuff there, keep 'em coming!

  19. I think it's awesome that you are obsessed with your cat, you should sample his mews of terror, haha

    ReplyDelete
  20. i used to snort fun dip. don't try it. it hurts.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Wow, I guess there r some questions u get asked repeatedly, like when a waitress wears cat ears for her job at a restaurant and a guy asks her which ears are the real ones? Anyone in that situation wants to say "You may feel clever for saying that, but in reality you're the millionth person who said that!" Also, u sure ur getting enough sleep/right foodstuffs?

  22. also, nice placement of ghost's n stuff, in "get him to the greek" wish it was in the club though, and not in the "jumping off the balcony scene" but it works out well w/ the bass

    ReplyDelete
  23. correction, roof*, jumping off the roof scene

  24. Joel Zimmerman (AKA Deadmau5) is just another guy living his life, loving his cat, trying not to impose on others, and just eating his tea mix.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah, but like, there must be some way, though I can't think of one, to gently control a conversation away from commonly asked questions, like you can't do much about 100 ppl coming up to you backstage and asking the same thing about the set, but still maybe in interviews, maybe redirect the focus to something you have in mind. Just an idea but maybe a group Q&A like they have at comicon where u ask ppl to ask dig questions(which are extremely hard to answer correctly) after the basic ones, "like what did you most regret after working with kaskade?", "what do you think is melleefresh's real age?", "what would be the protocol for asking out tommy lee's ex wife?" etc.

  28. WE WANTZ MOAR STUFFS LIKE DIS

Meowingtons should have his own reality show on VH1

    ReplyDelete
  29. Deaudmau5!
You should fix a show in the gashouder amsterdam, its a venue made for an artist of the exact caliber that you are! I've seen your show numerous of times, but my guess is that in this venue your show will be at its maximal potential!

  30. So there's another person who actually finds iced tea's power tasty. :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. i don't have any exciting questions to ask you, or any ass-lickin'-good comments of endearment. not that i don't have nice things to say, i just don't wanna get my nose all brown

i'm curious to know what fan experiences stick out in your mind. weird/creepy/etc.

also wondering how many kids have sent you pix of their dead mice

    ReplyDelete
  32. Very well put Mau5ter, I suck at taking photos, and try to avoid them when Im doing events as well but sometimes I get caught and do them. Keep doing what your doing, definately have seen your music progress and constantly change directions over the years but its easy to see its not selling out, its just what your feeling as you go, My music has definately changed as I grow.

BTW, Sorry you had all those Gremlins creeping in Austin, I could clearly see your frustration at the music hall when the laptop almost got labeled the "Flying Fuck" LOL. Same for the crash at ACL. Sucks, glad that hasnt happened to me yet but everyone of us have our day.

  33. too bad you can't google how to get people not to hug you. Pepper spray? Burp? Pretend you're being called by your mom?

    ReplyDelete
  34. 13. I totally agree with that 1 and if the chance comes, I would like to do one with you. if possbile, talk about something, that has noting to do with your professional life=)

  36. Drama! Who cares if some kids call you a dj? That's cool you do live sets, but I'm sure it's a lot of pre-programed music in your laptop, which most dj's use now anyway. At an event if your set is sandwiched between 2 dj's, it's not like a Opera singer than a baseball player than a priest. Entendeu? Save the debates for politicians.

  37. I think people overthink EDM producing waayy 2 much, just enjoy and respect the craft of making music. Period.

    ReplyDelete
  38. By that I mean that people should't no matter how much they like an artist, put them up on a pedestal and put them in a position where they are obligated to set an example.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I absolutely hate it when people refer to you as "DJ Deadmau5"... I just stop, look them right in the eye and correct them plainly by saying, "Producer, Deadmau5."
