other peoples lunch

yeah... i guess im pretty easy to hate. Especially by my fellow producer peers.... thankfully, i can count on my fingers the number of times some person has appoached me, or i have sought out, a piece of music... and did my own interpretation of it.... i'd say 2 out of 10 times... it actually ends up pretty cool, we become friends, and we have good times... and our journey continues and we defo plan future collaborations for sure...

so what the fuck is wrong with the other 8? Why does everyone have to be so fucking stupid... what the fuck is it? Money? Jealousy? Spite? or just plain stupidity... all for fuckin 15 minutes of online "fame"? I hate to think a friendship with me can be valued at 15 minutes of fame only to be relapsed back into whatever situation they were in before crossing paths with me. But i guess it seems to be the trendy thing to do.

I dont sit around my computer making music to out-do  or overcome anyone else. Im just twiddling away doing what in love to do then sharing my gift... and when the opportunnity arises... i like to join in or ask others to participate from time to time... Of course, given that everything at some point needs to go into the "big label machine" i usually just smile and nod that process till it goes away and we have a product to unleash to the world... and usually so do the other parties... no love lost.

It's really quite simple.  But for some reason, sometimes, you get these people who you'\d figure are pretty fuckin cool need to inject their own brand of stupidity into the machine as if it were some kind of ATM machine... then of course that immediately terminates any future hopes of a working relationship right there.

and of course it doesnt end there... hindsight is a fucking BITCH. So probably somewhere down the line your likely to get a select few who are now SET on trying to get on your balls to remind you that they fucked something up. ... maybe start some kind of online rivalry, or public outlash that vaguely outlines their own failure in the process providing it makes me look like im some kind of thief.

Happens all too often in the music business. Advice for those planning into entering this awkward state of affairs when it comes to music and money... know who your friends are. And when you make new ones, you can usually tell where their proiorities are when they arent talking to their managers about how much money they could be making off something.

It's still hard to stay out of it when the fuckin babies start throwing the sand in the sandbox, but... being the outspoken opinionated guy i probably am... that proves to be a challenge most days.

ps.  fuck you.

I know exactly what you're talking about, too. It seems like everything is about money these days and the nice guys get fucked.

  13. Your gift/talent and passion/love for what you do is why you have such a loyal and lasting fan base. It sucks that those people try to take advantage and fail to see the true potential that those bonds of friendship can create. Money is blinding and people will get all too into the grind of the machine and hopes to be where you are. It is just nice to see that someone of your caliber exists within an industry that is known to be so corrupt. I wish you the best and thank you for bringing about such a great talent. Your talent doesn't just get listened to, it gets felt and that is something not many people are able to say they have done.

  15. Sadly it's what many people have allowed themselves to become. Be it through greed, the want to be in some type of spotlight or whatever else you want to throw into the mix most people don't stop and think before they open their mouths or act upon a situation. It sucks.

  16. I agree with all that you are saying joel , we can count on our true friends in one hand , others are there just to see us having a bad time , most of then can't see us growing on our work or having success in life ...

  17. sucks that this is how it is, i've run into similar problems my whole life in regards to music production and I've never made a cent, it really is disheartening that most aren't in it for the passion of it, purely as an easy way to make cash.

  21. Not that we'll ever know, but...wtf just happened now to make you post that? Maybe you can set up a riddle or a flow chart or something, that if the other person fails it you refuse to work with them.

    Something like...

Is the person: MALE/FEMALE? If MALE --> is the person short/fat/ugly/stupid/Hitler/Lord Voldemort?
If YES --> DO NT WANT.
If NO --> does the person have a decent sense of humour?
If NO --> DO NT WANT.
If YES --> play minor practical joke and see if they flip out.
IF YES --> DO NT WANT.

...Etc. I dunno. Just an idea in case you were THAT bored. Hope things work out. :D

  22. All of this over the silly fake jeans comment? Jeez mau5 I told you I was just playin' and I lerved you. What else do I gotta do? Sometimes things get, whatever. ;)

You worry too much about haters. Focus on business and talent. If your focus isn't on that, right now especially, then you aren't doing something right. I got a feeling people might be screwing you over on the business side of your music/brand when it comes to the paper.

Oh well. Nothing but love and good vibes from me. Hope things stay awesome for you!

  23. Keep up with the gift man, and know that their own insecurities are the real reason they shoot down your work. They don't understand that if you didn't respect them and their work, then you wouldn't put countless hours into creating a masterpiece in TRIBUTE. They take it as you are showing them how you did it better, especially when they recieve more notoriety from your interpertation. Stay up and keep killin it.

BTW, peace at finding YOUR one ;)

P.S. and if ya ever happen to come down to visit the "Fun" and "exciting" lil old' town Garner in (Don't plan on it)Raleigh, North Carolina, ya can sit back, smoke some old Marijuana, relax, and escape all the bullshit Producers my friend. ;) and whatever ever happened to that 781 Fails Mau5 head that was supposed to have the cameras built inside, etc?!

  31. I really enjoyed seeing it from your point of view Joel, I mean, your carreer whent Skyrocket, and at some point, everybody had heard about the mau5. I think that's bloody briliant, and to be admired, not like them peoplez that go on (RandomCountry)-Idol and hope to make a carreer. They get their 15 mins of fame, and thats it. But, since it was (apparently looked) so easy for you, i'ma go ahead and guess it wasn't, people started hatin'.

However, the hate directed towards you is just plain silly in my opinion. Of course people will be jealous, but people are always jealous. ALWAYS. Think it has something to do with the way of the world. ;)

Anyway, thanks for the read, enjoyed it.
I'llz be your friendz, anyday. :>

Oh, one last thing, would you happen to recall the Soundcloud-favorites you had a while back? What did ever happen to them? :)

  33. It's funny that you posted this because a week or two ago I saw a status post by Robbie Rivera on FB complaining about the lack of originality coming from most producers/djs whatever. Then his wife ranted for about 5 hours about how amazing he is and how he doesn't get the attention he deserves. (Duh you're his wife, you would think that) She specifically mentioned how Deadmau5 is full of himself and is doing it for the fame all while copying other people's hard work. She justified Rivera's status by saying something like he never complains but enough is enough. It was just like in high school, when the kid talks shit about the cool kid bc he doesnt get all the attention and love..

I thought it was pretty low for someone in your industry to be shit talking and on Facebook of all things! I don't mind Rivera but after that post, it totally turned me off his music. Negativity doesn't help support the music. Just sad.

Oh, and I tried to look for it and he's deleted it. Lamoooo!

No one gets famous with a group of haters. Haters only come out when you've made it big and some people have nothing but jealousy and hate for what they can't do. love you!

  35. Joel, you are amazing... I realize that more and more every day and I've been a fan for years. These people envy you, your talent. They are jealous and this is their reaction to these feelings. The best advice is to not give a fuck and to keep doing what you're doing and doing it fucking awesome like you have been. Deep down they know you are a phenomenon and people fucking love you and will continue to as you grow like you have been. The people that don't give a shit about anyone or anything are the happiest ones in life. Plus doing this will make them envy you and piss them off even more, which is always entertaining :D I love you and will continue to go to every one of your shows that I possibly can and pray that one day I'll be lucky enough to meet you. See you at smokeout sweetheart :)

  36. sharing your "gift" eh? is that what they call the clap these days? hahaha, im just kidding.

thats pretty heavy stuff right there. i bet when youre bigger its harder to find people who are more dedicated to the music, and not just the money. my fellow co-producers are all in it for the music, never once asking me about money. but when you're a "no one" in the scene i guess that's easier to do since people without monetary expectation will be more willing to work with you than those who do.

keep doing what you do, im still a fan :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. dont worry about him, orlando voorn is a faggot with not even 5% of the skill you have. i wouldnt even bother because hes just seeking attention about his shitty little song you turned into a great track. So what if you used a bit of his track, if i were him i would have just accepted it for being so good, but the money thing was a bit too much. Id love to say 'theres one word for him' but theres many words including : bitch, fag, cockgobbler, sonofafuck < LOL, asshole... im not going to continue but you see my point lol just dont let him piss you off your comment where you laughed at him > WIN !! :D

  38. You sound a little bit childish and full of yourself joel. Stop thinking everyone is out to get you, just keep making your tunes. Don't let your tweeny fans boost your ego too much either.

It really has nothing to do with you making remixes of their tracks, it has everything to do with respect and how you act outside of the studio. Keep doing what you love and making people dance.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Comments on the deadrat6 videos are full of ignorant comments stating "ohh look how easily replicated his music is, no originality, too basic/boring etcetcetc..." Well.. when you think about it, any song in the world could be replicated, the real talent is having the ability to create it in the first place.

You're meant to shine, if other people can't handle that tell them to put on a fuckin pair

  42. Man, you seem like you can pretty gruff guy, and I know just how troublesome that can be when it comes to friends, since I'm the same way. But it's also pretty handy, because if people can actually stand to stick around you (not work mind you, actually hang out or something) for more then those 15 minutes, you pretty much know you've got a friend.

I'm sure showbiz really fucks the social aspect of life up, beyond the Tabloid Press and retarded Foes. Regardless of all the Pros of being successful, the biggest loss is the ability to make friends. Not to mention all of the old ones who come out of the woodwork, like you said about ex's :P

Looks like Orlando decided to put in his two cents on the situation. Sounds to me like someone's pissed that they didn't stand to make as much money off of this deal as they had hoped. Notice that he mentions repeatedly that he's "been in this business" for ages; I feel like he's gotten a swelled ego over that time and has unrealistic expectations about what he "deserves" to be making on such a deal.

Point being, if he was really in it purely for the music, he wouldn't have made such a big deal about the money side of things, particularly when it's not like you personally have anything to do with those decisions.

...if it's any consolation, his "revenge" track on Soundcloud is made of suck and fail.

  52. dude That's f'd up!!! who heard of orlando voorn before YOU remixed his song! he should be happy that him and his music are NOW be heard cause of YOU! And that track he made to mock you sounds REAllY F'N BAD!!! Where did he dust off that beat 1996? I watched you take something like double rainbow and just playing around in your studio for a few hours or so make a track That sounds really good, not your best or anything but a really good track. that POS track Dorn made to mock you or whatever just gose to show who the real talent is! I'm really upset cause I really like your remix of that song and was hoping you where going to play it in AC on the 3rd now I don't know? I my just make a tee shirt that says "Fuck Paco!" whats your size I'll make you one too? Dude you are most grounded celeb I've ever seen and hope shit like this dosen't cause you to change who YOU ARE!!!! I think that what you do on facebook, twitter and ustream shows everything I just said and more than that it shows how an artist in the 21st century can connect with his/her fans directly without any PR people, record co, ect getting in the middle trying to tell you what WE want to hear! KEEP IT REAL!!!!

    Thanks, just another stupid fan!!

  53. The world needs haters to make talent shine the way it does. without all these people being on your balls all the time about everything, i dont think alot of musicians would have the inner fire to come out with the crazy stuff they do. i hate haters as much as the next guy, but isnt it sometimes fun to see them hate something they really like just to hate it? fuck the small minded short remembering people, and keep it coming for people like me who enjoy the shit out of your music and play it as loud as my stereo can in my car everywhere i go. LONG LIVE THE MAU5!

  54. Joel,

Highest form of compliment is imitation.

As far as all of them backstabbers go; Big or small, F*CK 'EM ALL. You don't owe anyone anything.

All the backstabbers will put in all of their energy trying to give you crap with that riverly or whatever. But at the end of the day you'll be doing what you love and doing it well, with your fan base growing like it is. While they'll be viewed as someone with a prickly stick stuck up their *ss slowly fading away into the background.

If it looks like sh*t, and smells like sh*t, it's probobly sh*t. Unfortunatelly, you're not going to find a diamond in there.

All the love to you darlin' <3

  55. we all love you joel fuck everyone else-even me for that matter- cuz ill still laugh at you and say fuck you back... and love your music.. so keep up the attitude and makin music.

  56. Personally..

I did search around after reading this and I'm at least partially aware of what brought this post.

Anyway, I heard your remix first and thought it was a banging track to drop in a set but as I was searching for it I found the original.

Don't get me wrong, I know I haven't been as exposed to electronic music as other people older than me. Come to think of it I only have a mere 8 years of exposure compared to others but I listen to what I LIKE to hear and venture out into the older music to get a 'how did we get from there to here' kind of thing.

I enjoyed both the remix and the original but for very different reasons. I find it silly how some people blindly follow your releases without even bothering to dig deeper and find out where the original came from.

I do find myself disliking the fans that follow you as if you were fucking Jesus. As far as producers go, I'm glad you're getting more popular but with that comes the bandwagon and the people going "OH MY GAWWD DEAD-MAU-FIVE IS SO HOT HES THE SHIT."

Its kind of sad to hear that whatever happened during negotiations pretty much got fucked over or whatever it was. The A City in Florida release was quite random in my opinion. Whether it was the right thing to do is something I have no say over.

Anyway getting out of this pseudo rant thing I seem to have spawned..

I think this whole situation was spawned by the clashing of people who are too ignorant to look beyond whats in front of them and the people who refuse to accept changing times and live in the past.

As for the unlikable part its time for a cliche.
You are yourself. People just need to DEAL WITH IT or GTFO.

And however likely, or unlikely, it is that you read this.. I respect you so much for holding on to the rocket that is your success and all the pressure that comes with it. Keep doing what you do best and fuck the rest.

  58. I recently went to a pretty awesome music festival. while i was there i saw around 30 differnt artist and all of it was insane but there was one Dj that just didn't feel right the music was good but you could taste that it was only for the money and the fame.I have loved electronic music since i was introduced to daft punk when i was around 11, since those early days music has become a secnd breath to me. and i assume if you become a superstar in the music industy there was once that feeling that without that fill of music your day was useless (and those days blow!) i just dont understand how something like the four fans you might gain or the extra 200 bones could stray you away from the grooves! i have recently came to a concluion while trippin when the drugs, money, fame, trumph the music life can be chaos but when the music trumph's the Drugs, money, fame all is at peace. some people just need to figure that out for themselves........... Wolfgang puk just keep doing what you do. Your Mau5 Bots mutiply daliy brother! we all love you.

  59. If a producer can not show another producer support for spending time on something they have worked on then fuk them cocksukers. Its a remix thats the point of it to mod the layout of the mix to your style.

Sayin this imo a bad remix of that certain track that peole like to bang heads to... its about 170 bpm n is the genre of UK Hardcore. Mad rave shit used to listen to it but 170bpm lady gaga does not float my boat. Partial to rare gabber (dutch) when cained tho.

Thats just my opinion and one persons opinion is different to everyone elses.

Im at a stage where i listen to see how well produced a track is and what samples/instruments i like in a track instead of wow thats a catchy 808 beat with a autotuned vocal (unless cained).

  72. Haha, I laughed so hard at this:

"4. RA forgets to renew DNS.... is bought out by patio furniature company, forcing RA posters to go outside."

    Hahaha, awesome.

My 2 cents in a nutshell:

    - this issue was something that happens all the time, not just in the music industry, but in any business; two parties don't agree on all terms - the deal is off - no hard feelings

    - it's pretty self-explanatory when someone goes that far in his actions as Orlando did. I mean, c'mon, really?

    - the track he made about you is plain crap. It's not about the genre or anything, but as from the sheer production point of view - it's crap.

    - Orlando is probably a very good producer, I really don't know anything about him, but obviously some people think that way, so he probably is to some extent - if that's true then why the fuck bother with all of this and just look like a total duche.

And once again, lulz for the no 4, hahaha. :)

  73. I deleted this remix out of my music library. I also deleted all OV tracks as well. I know jealousy when I see it and this guy has a problem. I'm crossing my fingers for you Joel with this years DJ Mag Top 100 list. It's time to dethrone the Dutchies.

  76. Having input or feedback is always a great thing.. But it is true, you sometimes don't know who your friends are unless you know them well. And their priorities or goals, can affect some stuff.

I just try not to take anything personal. Best thing to do!

  77. Same goes for friendship, you give them you're all, and they still fuck you over! Obstacles of life I guess... why are they in the way? Who knows, but it's super annoying....

I wish people were more appreciative of things as we were. =(

  79. I agree with what realkunn said. That, plus the fact that Orlando is clearly dry in the pockets right now. He needs to loosen up and accept that if agreed to a remix, he should not bitch about whether he ended up liking it or not...money issues aside

  80. I feel like the point of making music should always be TO MAKE MUSIC. I would not be able to stand an artist that's just in it for the money or fame or whatever the fuck else. If I ever do collab with any artist they better be on the same page.

  81. I'd like to be your friend!:) You're awesome, saw you at Pukkelpop, unforgettable. Could have gone all the way to Belgium (i'm from Sweden...) just for that show!

  82. Hey Joel - we are not responsible for what other people do, the only thing we have control of is our reaction to them. You sound disappointed and not clear why they do what they do. There could be many reasons for that - as you mentioned - the jealousy thing, they may feel intimated, or full of themselves... or something we haven't thought of. Why? Because there is always another perspective on things. Our view on every matter is like a segment of an orange. And each person is another segment. No human knows and understands the big picture, no human can see a situation from all angles. It's called omniscience, and only God possesses it. So the choice is yours - you can worry and question and get upset about why other people do what they do, or you can go in another direction and focus on your own reactions, and try to be more accepting of situations instead of judging them harshly. Because you are the owner of only one perspective. And because acceptance does not mean agreeing with things. Acceptance is a choice to let go of responsibility and control of other people...

  83. Dude, just curious, where you skeptical to read remarks or double check on your blog? Cause I do the same thing, and your writing techniques reminded me of my own.. Kinda cool. I'm not gona go nuts, but give you the remark you needed. This isn't from your middle class dumbass. I respect the shit out of what you've written. It sounds like you have ideas and beliefs some don't even see .. too cool bro.. we might be alike in a wierd way. Please tap into that inner joel as much as possible, express yourself, and change the game! I'm sick of being put down. Maybe your a jesus and being mistaken. No offense but when you got super mainstream some reason I got skeptical. Then I saw your " like" on facebook and saw you still interact very heavily with your fans. Then found this. Respect! Don't let people tell you otherwise. You know you are right. It will prevail if you hold onto it! I know your intentions are for the better of things. The worst would be falling victim to the burning oil and lose your eyesite. As for the rest of the artists, well they might be burned. But you can reach out and turn the knob down.. if not, your not blind man.. stay that way.. And don't keep it a secret knowledge. But I don't want to see hatred towards you either. PLan it out well. Whats life anyways dude? maybe you should just be a radical. Stay stoked. please. ( thanks ) if your reading this. .. I kinda wana talk to you sometime -.-

  84. The same rules apply to many parts of life. Its a pain in the ass and noone is ever happy with their shortcomings. Its only those who take their failures and try to build them into strengths who come out on top, not the shallow and weak who use these same failings to exploit anyone long enough to bring them down their level. You, my friend seem to have brought yourself from the ground up in order to see things you probably never expected simply because you dare to dream big. Kudos to you man, motherfucking kudos!!

  85. See the ultimate fighter season one for some insane negotiation tactics by dana white, I saw him argue while angry, but instead of resulting in a lose/lose situation he dug himself up to win/win.

  86. You should see austin, TX, granted there are some cool legit DJs/producers here but there are some back stabbing people. I just recently had a very Popular name here in austin tell me, Do you know how the rich get rich and how Austin Producers/Djs make it to the top? Backstab and Lie, he said you have to do it. I stated, dude, thats not me, I cant do it, guess thats why Im still right where Im at, I hate politics and kissing ass, why cant people just come together for the same passion. Why doesn everything have to be a fucking competition or "King of the Hill" Its that same fucking atitude that retards the scene or the creation of good music between artists.

Well, at the level your at, and Im sure I dont need to say, watch your back and make sure you have good people watching your back. Some many people out there are wanting to try to use you as a stepping stone or have some hidden agenda to use you to catapult themselves.
    Keep rockin bro
